Monitoring Well Closure / Destruction – Atlas Missile Site 9
Project Description:
RMC conducted monitoring well closure activities at the former Atlas “E” Missile Site 9 located in Hereford, Colorado. The primary purpose of this investigation was to purge and sample five existing groundwater monitoring wells to confirm groundwater impacts are below regulatory standards and perform subsequent well decommissioning activities.
Site 9 is located approximately six miles southeast of Hereford, Colorado in northern Weld County. The original site consisted of 16.82 acres fee and easements which were part of 245.6 acres of land that was acquired by purchase or condemnation between 1959 and 1961. The site was one of nine Atlas “E” missile sites operated by the U.S. Air Force under the 549th Strategic Missile Squadron at F.E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyoming.
In accordance with the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Scope of Work, Site Safety and Health Plan, and Work Plan all project objectives were achieved. Work tasks commenced on April 24, 2007 and concluded on May 30, 2007. Project achievements included:
- Preparing a complete draft and final Work Plan, Site Safety and Health Plan, Field Sampling Plan, and Quality Assurance Plan for USACE review and approval prior to implementing field actions.
- Performed low flow purging and sampling of five monitoring wells.
- Assessment of data validity and comparison of analytical results to regulatory standards.
- Perform well decommissioning activities.
- Management of investigation derived wastes (IDW).
- Preparing a complete draft and final report for approval by USACE for review and approval.
Based upon achievement of project objectives, RMC recommended no further action at Missile Site 9.
