Class III Inventory of Four Mine and Mill Sites

Class III Inventory of Four Mine and Mill Sites

Project Description:

RMC Consultants, Inc. (RMC) and Mountain States Historical conducted a cultural resource inventory of four mine and mill sites along the California Gulch waterway in Lefthand Canyon, Boulder County, Colorado.

In order to determine potential impacts to the historic resources under the Section 106 process, tasks conducted for the cultural resources inventory included proper site documentation and evaluation under National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) significance criteria, and management recommendations including a recommendation of NRHP eligibility for recorded sites.

The work was completed for Walsh Environmental, of Boulder, Colorado, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The four historic mine and mill sites recorded included:
  • Adit Tunnel (associated with the Big Five Mine) (5BL10309)

  • Captain Jack Mine and Mill (5BL10308)

  • White Raven Mine (5BL10307)

  • Conqueror Mill site (5BL10306)
The Adit Tunnel, Captain Jack Mine and Mill, and White Raven Mine are all recommended as not eligible for listing in the NRHP, therefore no further work is recommended at this time.

The Conqueror Mill is recommended eligible for listing in the NRHP, and immediate and long term preservation actions are recommended.
