Site Investigation / Soil Removal Action
- Red Feather Lakes Work Center
Project Description:
RMC was tasked to perform various field removal actions and to investigate potential contaminant releases to the subsurface from past activities at the Red Feather Work Center. Project objectives included sampling of two existing domestic wells, disposal of existing hazardous material at the site, excavation and disposal of impacted soils, disposal of excess debris across the site, perform other general upkeep procedures, and install up to eight monitoring wells to assess groundwater contamination.
The Red Feather Work Center is located in the SW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 35, Township 1 South, Range 73 West, approximately 23 miles west of the town of Livermore, Colorado. Access is via Highway 287 at the intersection of Red Feather Road in Livermore, Colorado. The Work Center is located on Dowdy Lakes Road approximately one-quarter mile north of the intersection of Red Feather Lakes Road.
In accordance with the USDA Forest Service Task Order and the approved Removal Action Plan and Site Safety and Health Plan, all project objectives were achieved. RA work tasks commenced on April 17, 2007 and concluded on September 5, 2007. Project achievements included:
- Preparation of a draft and final Removal Action Plan (RAP) and Site Safety and Health Plan for USDA Forest Service review and approval prior to implementing field actions.
- Sampling of on-site domestic wells for 3 consecutive quarters to assess impacts to drinking water.
- Consolidation and segregation of miscellaneous debris located at the site. Approximately 120 cubic yards of debris were sent for recycling or disposal at an approved landfill as appropriate.
- Consolidation and sampling of drums containing unknown liquids. Drum contents were identified and transported off site for disposal.
- Excavation of 158 cubic yards of impacted soils.
- Confirmation soil sampling of base and perimeter of excavation to ensure adequate removal of all impacted soils.
- Off-site disposal of all impacted soils at a Subtitle D landfill.
- Backfill, compaction, and seeding of excavation area to match pre-existing surface conditions.
- Installation, development, and sampling of three monitoring wells to assess potential impacts to groundwater.
- Management of drilling investigative derived waste (IDW).
- Implemented Best Management Practices (BMP’s) to control erosion and reduce sedimentation throughout the project duration.
- Preparing a complete draft and final report for approval by USDA Forest Service for review and approval.
Based upon achievement of project objectives, RMC recommended that continued monitoring of existing wells be performed to assess contaminant trends at the site.
